Poomse

Tae Kwon Do Poomse are prearranged exercises, or forms, performed against imaginary opponents. They are similar to the kata of karate. Considered by many martial artists as the most important part of Tae Kwon Do training, poomse develop the body, mind, and spirit. The body develops speed, power, and balance as imaginary real-life self-defense scenarios are acted out, some against multiple opponents. Without the risk of hurting a partner, even the most deadly techniques can be practiced at full speed and power. The mind and spirt is developed as intense concentration is required to picture and understand exactly what each movement in the poomse represents...performing a poomse as simply a series of movements without this focus accomplishes very little. While poomse for beginners are quite simple, they can become quite complex as the student progresses.
As a World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) school, we learn the eight Palgwe Poomse from white belt up to black belt. As a first degree black belt, all of the eight Taeguek Poomse are learned. While there may be some slight differences from school to school, both Palgwe and Taeguek poomse are performed the same the world over.
